What is Movement?

In order to move at all, a certain level of strength and stability are necessary. A baby crawls, then walks, then runs. All of these stages require higher levels or strength and stability. However, once basic levels of force production are achieved and can be applied to every day life (even when we are just entering the fundamental stages of our physical existence or overcoming an injury or disability) we are able to explore/regain new movement patterns. These may be more simple movements such as getting up off the floor with little assistance, or moving more swiftly with the co-ordinated efforts of both one's upper and lower body (eg, dance, tennis, martial arts, etc).

You Can Improve at any Age or Skill Level

After completing the basic stages of childhood development in movement, regardless of where and when one begins this journey, there is potential for improvement, as long as the same basic principles are followed; begin at a comfortable and competent level, then progress consistently as one's age, genetics and physiological limits allow. Anyone at any age can improve, as long as patience and consistency are applied to safe and reasonable goals. As explained in our Athletic Development classes, certain prerequisites are necessary before moving onto more complex skills. In addition, strength may also be an important factor for some individuals (usually more advanced in age) who have lost much of their general strength through years of inactivity following injury or a sedentary lifestyle. Nevertheless, progress can be made across all age groups as long as proper nutrition and recovery are respected.
